Used Car Prices | Used Car Values
Whats the difference?

There is a difference between used car prices and used car values. The difference depends on what side of the transaction you are on. If you are selling the car than prices is your category, but if you are buying than values is your concern.

Either way you want to know what the vehicle is really worth and as with anything its only worth what people are willing to pay. Used car price and used car value guides are just that a guide to what the vehicle is worth. As I tell my kids "Everything is negotiable, EVERYTHING!"

One of my favorite things about being about being a used car buyer was the negotiating. After the thrill of getting every car I ever wanted was gone the thrill of negotiating was permanent.

There are several guides and strategies for figuring out the value of a car and I like to use two or three of them to see if they are close in price or not.

Each guide has basically three categories for grading the condition of the car as fair, good and excellent. Some also have a transaction value category for trade-in, private party and retail. The most popular guides used are Kelly Blue Book , Edmunds Used Car Prices , NADA Pricing Guides and Parkers Used Car Pricing Guide.

All of these guides are very good and as I said I recommend that you use more than one to obtain a value. I have seen guides differ in price 5%-10% on a value. That can be a big difference as you increase in price.

There is a REAL TIME price guide that I also use to gauge what people are paying or willing to pay on any given vehicle at anytime. Thanks to the internet this is possible at anytime, I go to ebaymotors and look up the vehicle and see what completed sales are and this gives you what people are willing to pay.

I try to buy pr start my negotiating for a vehicle at the fair or trade-in value for a excellent or near to it condition car. You should figure out the maximum you are willing to pay for a car and stick to it so when you are out looking you do not get emotional and over pay.
