Car Buying Tips

Used car buying tips when shopping

Car buying tips can range from person to person. I often get asked from friends and family what are some used car buying tips I can give them, or what is the best used car.

Since I was a dealer I would say a sold car is the best car to me, and thats just my opinion. I say that because that is just what most people will give you when asking for a tip, their opinion.

What you want are cold hard facts that will aid you in the process of vehicle selection.

Lets start off by avoiding things that could be a problem, like cars that are all souped up with after market add-ons. These can include rims, radios, lights, amps, speakers, gauges and any other thing that was not on the car when made at the factory.

Most problems I have found with cars are from all of these things added to the car, usually by someone who did not do the most important part and that was maintain it.

I start with how much money do you have to spend?

There is no sense in looking at $10,000 cars when you only have $3,000 to spend. Besides there are tons of cars that are between $2,500 and $5,000 that are really nice.

Next is what type of vehicle are you in need of, notice I said in need of. Again you may need a four door car but want a two door.

This is where you begin to narrow your search, I would suggest you look for a private party, craigslist or ebay for a deal. I am not suggesting you not go to a dealer but they mark up the cars and are looking to make a profit.

A private seller may be in need of money and you are able to get a better deal. If the dealer gets hold of that private seller first hes gonna get the car for what you could have and then double or triple the price and sell it to you.

This is a fact that alot of people do not know or realize, but it is true. I read an article where there is a used car dealer doing Buy Here Pay Here and they admit that they buy the cars for $3,000 and sell them financed starting at $9,000.

Most used car dealers pay an average of $1,500 to $5,000 for cars they resell. When they resell them they double or triple the price not to mention what they get for selling warranties.

Lets get back to the tips.

When you find something you like do some research and see if there is a lot of major known issues with the vehicle first and I always recommend a car history search and a mechanic inspection.
