Tip 1
Check
the condition of the engine oil
If you
were a doctor
this would be like making a patient say "AHHHHH". Use the dip stick in
the
engine compartment and look at the condition of the oil. If it is grey,
creamy white, white in
colour or thick and
sludgy. If it is there
is a problem with the engine like water or ion fillings. A possible
blown gasket or worn pistons! The
oil should be dark, black or honey brown. The oil should not
be . Stay away from that car. |

# Tip 2
Check
the indicator lights
They are not there
just because they look cool! Before
starting the car. Turn on the ignition on (one position before
starting) and check that all indicator lights come on. Start the engine
and see that all indicator lights go off. Definetly make sure the
engine light (could be any number of problems if it does not) , ABS
brakes and air bag (if there is one) go off. These are expensive to
repair and dangerous to drive without them working 100%.
Leave
this car where you found it.

Tip 3
Check the transmission
If
the car is an automatic. Put the emergency or park brake on.
Start
the engine. Put yor foot on the brake. Set the car into reverse or
drive. If there is delay of 2 seconds or more before you feel the
engine engaging then there are problems with the transmission.
If
the car is a manual drive do the same except release the clutch slowly.
If there is a slow uptake before power is released from the engine then
there is a problem with the clutch or pressure plate. Don't
buy that
car!

Tip 4
Run a Vehicle History Report to
see if it
was written off, salvaged, rebuilt, flooded, failed inspection, or the
odometer rolled
Get the VIN (Vehicle Id
No.) number
of a vehicle and check with local agencies if that car is not stolen or
finance is owing on it. In both cases you will lose the vehicle - so
check before you hand over any money. Check the car for VIN plates and
make sure they are the same all over the car, there can be up to one on
each main panel of the car. If something does not feel right - don't
buy that car! |

Tip 5
Get your own finance
Use
or find your own financing
company to approve a loan before you look at any vehicle. This will
give you confidence to negoiate a deal and not be mislead by
unscupulous car delears.
